Zama Magubane is a 22-year-old artist born in Gauteng, Germiston. Raised in the Vaal (south of Johannesburg) by both my parents. The prominent presence of both parents in her childhood influences how she understands duality of the feminine and the masculine. Magubane attended the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy and University of Witwatersrand – world class institutions that continue to inform her work and role in the community. Furthermore, Zama is the founder of Zama Magubane Arts, which began in 2022. The business has managed to host 6 shows in the space of one year, covering two provinces in the country (Gauteng and Mpumalanga). She hosts shows in collaboration with artists to uplift and facilitate collective learning experiences. In her words: “I created this platform for people like me, who do not have access to these opportunities. I want to be the voice of the African man that speaks our truth”. As her career emerges, Zama has successfully worked with remarkable brands such as Reebok and New Balance.
Magubane’s visual work is based on divine femininity, African stories, culture, and Afrofuturism. Her research explores spirituality and relationships through painting, drawing, and sculpting – with immense focus on painting. Her body of work focuses on memory, the shared experience, and the future.
