In the comfort of… My body of work is formed on the basis of the radical self-care of black women. Black women are often subjected to misogynoir (racism and sexism), misrepresentation and class oppression. From painting myself as a subject I transition into documenting different Black women in their own spaces. Radical self-care becomes prominent when I ask the women to choose a motif that best describes them or convey how they practice self-care. It is about Black women being able to relax and immerse themselves in the daily practices which make them feel good. It is important that I work collaboratively with the different women because there needs to be an element of trust and relationality between the artist, and subject. This body of work is important because, the conversation surrounding the representation of black women should never come to an end. The aim is for viewers to unlearn, relearn, learn and grow. This is something I chose to handle with care.
