• Untitled 2023

The architectural head replacement, meticulously constructed from triplex board, serves as a symbol of the structures and institutions that often define our perceptions of "The Other." Yet, by placing this building upon the shoulders of the figure, I aim to convey the burden carried by those who stand apart, those who must navigate a world that too often resists embracing their uniqueness.

  • Far from the Limelight

Plaster on board, 163cm-78cm In my relief sculpture crafted from plaster and adorned with verdant leaves, I have sought to create a poignant representation of the human figure. With arms gently cradling the chest and a headless form that seems to fade and converge, the sculpture invites viewers to embark on a transcendent exploration. This artwork emerged from a deeply personal space, born out of my own life experiences. Following a car accident that forever altered my existence, I have been confronted with the relentless challenges of enduring physical ailments. Each day, I discover new health issues, compounding the pain that lingers persistently. Through the creation of this sculpture, I endeavoured to transport my body into an alternate realm, a sanctuary distant from the harsh realities of our world. The absence of a head and feet symbolizes the fading away of my physical self, as if merging with the ethereal realm that offers solace and respite. The lush green leaves, sealed with a protective wood sealer, signify the transformation and growth that can arise from embracing personal struggle. They represent the vitality and renewal found within this oasis, where pain gives way to serenity and the spirit is free to soar. This is an embodiment of my desire to transcend the limitations imposed by my physical condition. It is a testament to the power of art to transport us to a realm where the burdens of the body can be momentarily set aside, and the true essence of our being can be discovered.
  • Suspended Serenity

Sand on board, 163cm-78cm With this one I have explored the ephemeral nature of existence through the medium of sand mixed with glue and water. The sculpture portrays a human figure, devoid of a head, with ethereal hands and feet fading away into nothingness. It invites viewers to contemplate a state of weightless suspension in a distant, tranquil space. Just as in my previous work, this sculpture embodies my ongoing quest to seek solace and respite from the harsh realities of life. It is born from a profound personal longing to escape the burdens of existence, to transcend the limitations imposed by the physical realm. The choice of sand, mixed with glue and water, lends the sculpture a delicate and fragile quality. It symbolizes the transient and ever-shifting nature of our human experience. The absence of a head suggests a release from the constraints of rational thought, inviting viewers to abandon the noise of the mind and surrender to the boundless possibilities of the unknown. The feetless and faded hands convey a sense of detachment from the physical world, emphasizing the ethereal quality of the sculpture. The figure appears to float, free from the confines of gravity, evoking a sense of weightlessness and liberation. It represents a momentary escape, a respite from the struggles and challenges we face in our daily lives.
  • Flight of Transcendence

The sand sculpture embodies a delicate and transient quality. The ephemeral nature of sand, mixed with the process of applying glue and water, emphasizes the impermanence of our earthly existence. The addition of gold wings, created by applying Safire gold powder on paper towel, represents the embodiment of aspiration, freedom, and the potential for transcendence. The juxtaposition of silver and gold in these sculptures represents the interplay between the material and the ethereal. The silver reflects the grounded aspects of our humanity, while the gold wings symbolize the divine and the limitless possibilities that lie within each of us. Together, they embody the harmonious coexistence of our earthly and spiritual selves. "The Flight of Transcendence" aims to inspire viewers to embark on their own journeys of self-discovery, pushing the boundaries of what is known and familiar. It is an invitation to explore the delicate balance between the tangible and intangible, the transient and eternal, and to embrace the transformative power that resides within each of us.
  • Embracing the Boundless

This enigmatic form appears to be simultaneously lying down on its side and suspended in a state of ethereal weightlessness. The figure is headless, with fading hands, while the feet remain grounded. Adorned with a cloth wrapped around the waist, touched delicately with Safire gold powder, it is placed against a black background also embellished with hints of gold powder. The arms are subtly raised in a graceful and unrestricted manner. This sculpture invites viewers to engage in a contemplative exploration of the delicate balance between grounded existence and limitless transcendence. The headless figure symbolizes a departure from the constraints of rational thought, encouraging viewers to explore the vast realms of the intangible and the mysteries of the human experience. The placement of the figure on a black background, touched with the golden accents of Safire gold powder, creates a visual contrast that accentuates the ethereal quality of the sculpture. The black background represents the infinite void from which all possibilities emerge, while the gold powder signifies the transformative power of enlightenment and the inherent divinity within us. The cloth wrapped around the waist serves as a subtle focal point, an emblem of modesty and vulnerability. The touch of Safire gold powder upon the cloth represents the infusion of sacred and precious qualities into the human experience, hinting at the spiritual potential that resides within each of us. The floating and seemingly weightless quality of the figure conveys a sense of liberation from the constraints of earthly existence. It invites viewers to envision a state of serenity and freedom, where the limitations of the physical body give way to boundless exploration of the mind, spirit, and emotions.

The central piece in this collection stands as a complete yet headless and limbless figure, symbolizing the sense of incompleteness that has permeated my life since a life-altering car accident left me with enduring physical and emotional scars. The absence of limbs and heads throughout this series emphasizes the notion of disconnection and the challenge of reassembling the fractured self.

Fractured Realities

Highlighting the resilience, struggle, and transformation inherent in my work, my series of figure sculptures explores the profound and multifaceted theme of the broken body, mind, and soul. These six sculptures, each depicting human figures from the waist to the neck, with the absence of heads and lower bodies, serve as both a reflection of my personal journey and a window into the universal experience of pain and fragmentation.

Three of the sculptures in this collection take distortion to an extreme, embodying the harshness of life’s blows that can rend us asunder. In one, the middle area appears as if it has been brutally excised, leaving the spine and abdomen exposed, a vivid metaphor for the visceral impact of trauma. The second features a thinner middle structure, highlighting the fragility of the human spirit under duress. The third displays half of the figure, almost as if it was shattered from one side, an embodiment of the profound imbalance and discord that adversity can introduce into one’s life.

The remaining two sculptures depict figures without chest areas, leaving only what remains from the waist up. These incomplete forms underscore the vulnerability and emotional damage that accompany the struggle to piece together a shattered person.

The decision to leave these sculptures in their natural clay state, reminiscent of desert-pink hues, amplifies the connection between the fragility of the human form and the raw, unadorned quality of life’s challenges. The earthy tones of the clay symbolize our organic nature, evoking a connection to the earth and grounding the viewer in the vulnerability of the human experience. The presence of intentional cracks within the natural clay finish further reinforces the theme of brokenness, illustrating that our emotional and physical scars are a fundamental part of our existence.

Through these sculptures, I seek to convey the unrelenting search for temporary respite and the eternal quest for wholeness in the face of life’s inexorable challenges. It is my hope that this series serves as an evocative testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity, as well as a reflection of the enduring human struggle to heal and rebuild, even when confronted with seemingly insurmountable brokenness.
