Fractured Realities
Highlighting the resilience, struggle, and transformation inherent in my work, my series of figure sculptures explores the profound and multifaceted theme of the broken body, mind, and soul. These six sculptures, each depicting human figures from the waist to the neck, with the absence of heads and lower bodies, serve as both a reflection of my personal journey and a window into the universal experience of pain and fragmentation.
The central piece in this collection stands as a complete yet headless and limbless figure, symbolizing the sense of incompleteness that has permeated my life since a life-altering car accident left me with enduring physical and emotional scars. The absence of limbs and heads throughout this series emphasizes the notion of disconnection and the challenge of reassembling the fractured self.
Three of the sculptures in this collection take distortion to an extreme, embodying the harshness of life’s blows that can rend us asunder. In one, the middle area appears as if it has been brutally excised, leaving the spine and abdomen exposed, a vivid metaphor for the visceral impact of trauma. The second features a thinner middle structure, highlighting the fragility of the human spirit under duress. The third displays half of the figure, almost as if it was shattered from one side, an embodiment of the profound imbalance and discord that adversity can introduce into one’s life.
The remaining two sculptures depict figures without chest areas, leaving only what remains from the waist up. These incomplete forms underscore the vulnerability and emotional damage that accompany the struggle to piece together a shattered person.

The decision to leave these sculptures in their natural clay state, reminiscent of desert-pink hues, amplifies the connection between the fragility of the human form and the raw, unadorned quality of life’s challenges. The earthy tones of the clay symbolize our organic nature, evoking a connection to the earth and grounding the viewer in the vulnerability of the human experience. The presence of intentional cracks within the natural clay finish further reinforces the theme of brokenness, illustrating that our emotional and physical scars are a fundamental part of our existence.
Through these sculptures, I seek to convey the unrelenting search for temporary respite and the eternal quest for wholeness in the face of life’s inexorable challenges. It is my hope that this series serves as an evocative testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity, as well as a reflection of the enduring human struggle to heal and rebuild, even when confronted with seemingly insurmountable brokenness.
