Nail Toilet is a durational installation piece featured in my home. While the piece itself has raised questions of privilege and underlying political statements that do not go unnoticed, for me it is a piece that depicts the strangeness of the times, the dangers in even the most ordinary of places. Typically bathroom spaces have always been a comfort for me, a place to escape knowing no one would walk in. This however has changed, much like the entire home space that has been required to function as more than a home space – the many comforts and ideas of escapism have been altered. The consistent noise of the nails being stuck down functions much like a dripping tap – irritating and eerie in a quiet space, much like the streets of Johannesburg in recent months.
